Background of the Study

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play an essential role in addressing social, health, and development issues in Nigeria. However, NGOs in Nigeria, like in many developing countries, have been susceptible to financial irregularities and mismanagement. ActionAid Nigeria, an international NGO focused on alleviating poverty and advancing social justice, operates in a challenging environment where financial transparency is critical for maintaining donor trust and ensuring effective program delivery. Financial irregularities in NGOs can range from misallocation of donor funds, improper use of resources, to accounting fraud (Olufemi & Adebayo, 2024).

Forensic auditing techniques are crucial in addressing financial irregularities in NGOs by identifying financial misconduct, investigating discrepancies, and ensuring that resources are used appropriately. These techniques include detailed financial audits, forensic analysis, and investigative methods to trace the flow of funds and uncover fraud. While many NGOs in Nigeria have adopted forensic auditing practices, challenges remain in fully implementing these techniques and ensuring that irregularities are effectively addressed. This study aims to assess the role of forensic auditing in addressing financial irregularities at ActionAid Nigeria, with a focus on its effectiveness in detecting fraud and improving financial accountability within the organization.

Statement of the Problem

Financial irregularities within Nigerian NGOs, including mismanagement of funds and fraudulent activities, undermine their ability to achieve their missions and sustain operations.
